I get quite a few queries about my studio set up so I thought I'd give you a little guided tour around it (which sounds a bit grand as it's only an average sized room!). It used to be our dining room and I was notorious for leaving all sorts out on the table which had to be cleared away every mealtime which was very frustrating for my family. Fortunately we had an extension added to our kitchen which has meant that I am now lucky enough to have a designated room.
First up are my shelves which on one side of the room have some of my precious book collection. Sometimes I lend them to students and get really nervous that they'll lose them but I can't bear not to share my resources if I think they are relevant (that's the teacher in me!).
On the opposite wall I have a really useful shelving unit which I fill with lots of my equipment boxes and small artworks to keep things tidy (sort of!). I also have a wonderful vintage dressmaking dummy which I sometimes use to display work. Please excuse the bubble wrap stuffed down the side, I try and keep any pieces I come by as they are always useful.
So there you have it, my studio, the place where I design and create!
I try and keep my shelves relatively tidy so that I can display my
pieces on them and see how they work together, this is especially handy for my mini wire sculptures.
Then I have
my desk which is where my precious sewing machine lives, it is a real
workhorse and I love it. We also use Bernina sewing machines at the
school I teach in and they are virtually indestructible which is just as
well considering how they are treated sometimes!
Above my desk is my noticeboard where I put bits and bobs that inspire
me and things that I am working on, it really helps when I am generating
ideas.
And finally I have a table which is usually covered in any number of things and positioned just under a window so I can have a good nose outside to our front garden/road and connect to the outside world. One morning I saw a muntjac deer walking along the pavement which was unexpected!
So there you have it, my studio, the place where I design and create!
Your studio space looks well proportioned and full of creativity - enjoy it all :)
